From a Job 
to a Vocation 

“And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee,saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, andAndrew his brother, casting a net into the sea;for they were fishermen. Then He said tothem, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishersof men.’ They immediately left their nets andfollowed Him.” Matthew 4:18-20

The calling of Jesus’ first disciples was marked by a decisive response from these fishermen. They were simply carrying out their work as usual. Then Jesus called them to follow Him and gave them a new assignment: to become fishers of men.

Much took place behind those few words, as we learn from the Gospel of Mark. Yet Matthew’s shorter account captures several essential truths about calling, work, and vocation......
